Welcome!

Thanks for being here! My name is Carly, and I’m spending the next 10 months in Bolivia, Chile, and elsewhere on a non-academic and independent travel grant called the Adventure Learning Grant (ALG) from Fairhaven College at Western Washington University.

Adventure Learning Grant

I’ll be using this platform to keep you all updated as I move through ups, downs, and betweens across ranges of landscapes between the Amazon, altiplano, and Patagonian peaks. My movements will be driven and inspired by rivers. I’ve shaped a framework of travel around rivers and people who live and fight for them. I will be working with Ríos to Rivers in the Bolivian Amazon and in central Chile, check them out below!

Ríos to Rivers: Chile

I’m starting my journey in the Northwest corner of Washington state, soaking up last moments of laughter, music, and adventures with the community I’ve found myself in for the last two years. I finished my junior year at Western Washington University last spring, spending my quarters exploring wormholes and expanses of ecology, social theory, language, education, and critical history– amongst other loose ends of interests. I’ve combined these into a self-designed major and program of study I’m calling Place-Based Ecological Justice, Knowledge, and Storytelling, with minors in Salish Sea Studies and Spanish.

These last weeks here in Bellingham have included packing my room into several bins and boxes for storage in a friend’s basement, last minute camping trips and hot spring dips, and a 3-day music and arts festival with my sibling and a wide spread of our friends. I’ll drive east in mid-September to go home to Colorado with a few stops at friends’ on the way, and then catch a flight to Bolivia early October.

I’m unsure of a lot of things as I look forward to the next 10 months, including what this page will look like. I hope to keep you all– my loved ones, community members, and maybe the rouge stranger– relatively up to date on my currents and eddies of movement and learning as I venture out and eventually venture back! Stay tuned if you wish <3
